What are SMS notifications and how do they differ from push notifications?

Short message service notifications allow businesses to send real-time news, alerts, or information to contacts. They are the notifications that appear directly on users’ mobile devices when they receive a text.

Since SMS works as a push to mobile devices, you don’t need to rely on a person checking a mobile website or application to get these alerts. Instead, these text alerts are pushed directly to a mobile user’s home screen, lock screen, or native texting application. They are sent the same way as a typical text message.

SMS notifications can be one-to-one text messages or text blasts sent to many contacts at the same time. While these alerts sound similar to push notifications, the two differ in several ways.

For one, SMS notifications don’t require users to download a mobile app. They work and can be sent to every cell phone. On the other hand, push notifications are messages sent directly from applications installed on users’ mobile phones. Users must download the mobile application to get push notifications. Additionally, customers can reply to SMS notifications but are not able to reply to push notifications.

Text notification frequently asked questions

Is sending text notifications legal?

Yes! Sending text notifications and alerts to subscribed contacts is legal. But, there are several rules businesses must follow. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991 requires businesses to get written or verbal opt-ins from contacts. Opt-ins can be obtained by having customers fill out a form or asking your customers to text you first.

You must also always provide a way for your contact to opt out of SMS campaigns, including notifications. One best practice is selecting an SMS provider that automatically unsubscribes customers if they reply with words such as STOP or CANCEL.

In addition, companies must register for The Campaign Registry. The registry was created to decrease the number of SPAM messages sent to consumers. The Campaign Registry is used to ensure that businesses' phone numbers and the messages they plan to send from it are real. Businesses using 10-digit long code numbers, 10DLC, to text their customers must sign up for The Campaign Registry. If you don’t, you may face message deliverability issues or fines. Plus, you risk being blocked.
